From England To America Tim Edwards Journeyman Plasterer

Wash those tools! blasted my fathers deep penetrating voice, from around the corner of the building. Thinking for just a split second to myself "What in the world is he complaining about now" as I glanced down from the third section of scaffold, looking back to the spot where our water pails and tools were arranged below, I could just make out a hint of white finish gleaming in the sun light on the very edge of my trowel, more then visible to be seen. My dad and grandfather alike were always on me in my younger days, about how " Tools make the man " and how a true plasterer needed pride to be valuable in his trade. Grandfather always went a bit further, telling stories of plasterers he seen through the years, and how it was common knowledge among builders, that a man who keeps his tools dirty, or just throws them upon the ground, once complete, is the very man you don't want plastering your home. As if this one behavior defined a man's abilities.
I remember my first few experiences in the plastering trade, some of which were the many pictures and souvenirs that filled our home, and our grandparents home, throughout my childhood. Boxes and wooden crates full of worn out trowels, previously being 4 to 6 inches wide at new condition, barely 2 inches wide when placed away in storage. Dad never threw away a trowel, and grandfather was always trying to make some new kind of tool, specialty plaster,or ornamental tooling tools. He always had bench after bench stacked with his new troweling inventions, some of which mirror those used to the this very day. Working from the age of nine years, having to carry one quarter of what most plasterers carried, not due to strength, rather I was simply to short to lift any real weight, high enough to clear the ground, and could often times be seen making what dad called " Tim Trails " around a job site, the worst of which I unintentionally installed upon a late 1600's wooden floor, for which my father nearly buried me for. In the English west Midlands, there was not a house, not a building, that was not plaster on the interior, and a great many were in-fact plaster outside as well. Plaster and its methods of use, seemed to have traveled through time, having been handed to the Romans during the building of Londinium, most likely making its way through the early and middle ages by word of mouth and by first hand sight of just how people built shelters through the ages. Coming to America in Nineteen hundred and eighty, I guess I was at first taken back by the way buildings were constructed here, seemingly as fast as possible, everyone had their own way to do things. Going to work for my first plastering contractor, I struggled to fit in, the way I had been taught, the very methods handed me by my grandfather, and his grandfather alike, were no longer worthy of use in this strange place.
While my hawk and trowel were present, and seemingly the same, they shared this position with only may hands, because all else had changed. Somberly adapting to the new methods, I made sure to talk to myself before performing every action I did not agree with, as if trying to hang on to my heritage, while being forced down a road built and based on production and quantity. I just could not believe union tradesman were trying to cover fresh brown coat with a single coat of lime finish, and the trowel it out to a " Passable state " move to the next wall, and repeat the process. Over the course of three decades I eventually adapted and fit myself into a production based trade here in the states, eventually working for most large plastering contractors in Michigan, and Later Indiana. One spring, a very cold spring, mind you, I had spent the better part of the winter without work, helping my wife to sustain her online business, and aid in her record sales across the Untied States. I had made so many calls, to so many companies, sent letters, walk through many doors, filling out applications for work to no avail, and finally, for the first time in what had became several months, the Lord hath shined his light upon me, blessed me, and delivered work, and some much needed time away from my lovely wife and her repetitive data entry. I remember the call as if it were yesterday, " 7 am Mr Edwards " - " Greenwood Indiana " for which my reply " Yes Sir, I will be there early Sir, ready to go " with all intended purposes of arriving around 630 am and getting a good look at the task at hand. However, I found myself there at 5am, bright eyed and bushy tailed, hopping around the jobsite inspecting everything, eagerly waiting on my supervisor to show up. 7 am came and went, and about 745 a really round man pulled up and introduced himself. I had never seen such a big plasterer, and in the back of my mind, was wondering just how this guy climbs the scaffold. Later finding out, he does not climb scaffold, rather spending his days pointing and screaming, which had to contribute to his enormous size and presence. A few more minutes passed and plasterers for all practical definitions, started arriving a few here, a few there. The elephant in the room had directed myself and a few others to begin straightening out the handrails and scraping the walls down, readying the surface for a synthetic finish coat. Having worked my way nearly to the top of four sections of scaffold and back down to the bottom row again, in a nervous, spastic frenzy of work, primarily culminated from not having worked in months. Standing at the ground level i began to hear a "Ting!" and "Ting" "Ting Ting Ting bam!! " a few small rocks jumped around and scattered around my head. Looking down I seen a margin trowel had fell from the very top of the scaffold and I heard a loud curse, and could hear someone climbing down at a high rate of speed. Picking up the margin as the plasterer made it to the bottom, I ask, " Is this your one, or My one" in what must have been a rather quirky accent to him. The plasterer simply looked up and stated " Its my one " "now get your dick beaters off of it" Stunned at the rude, strange response, I handed him the trowel and went on working my way down the wall. The laborers had readied the finish material and had placed throughout the scaffold runs, to make for quick and easy access. The elephant man screamed and started pointing, "you and you" and "you and you" "floater and spreader" and "floater and spreader" pointing at me and someone above me and stating "Floater" great! was my thought, if anyone could float, and I mean, really float, it was me, I had always prided myself in being exceptional when it comes to laying down finish. A thump beside me and there was the same plasterer who had made the rude remark, how lucky I was, he was to be my partner for the entire day, and knowing my luck, well beyond. With a snap, crack and a pop, he had the pail open, hawk loaded and started laying on finish like no one I had every seen. Starting his trowel at the very bottom and reaching well above the scaffold board above, in highly efficient, extremely fast trowel swipes, with a quick ratchet action at the top and bottom of each stroke, resetting his wall mud for each impending stroke. Within less then one minute, he had laid on over 100 square feet of finish and was halfway through the next section of scaffold. Without further delay, but shrouded in fear of keeping up, I jumped in and gave it my all, violently floating in a fit of rage, without care for where my excess finish went and what it landed on. Sweat poured off my forehead, blinding much of my visibility, looking up periodically I could see, and started to realize, there was simply no chance at me keeping up. This guy was going to get me fired on the very first day, and I had nearly 30 years of floating experience? As we wrapped up what was nearly an hour of finishing, other floaters started jumping down and helping me. Before long there were six ,men floating the wall this guy had laid on. Once complete, I was in disbelief a single plasterer could lay on so much, so fast. Listening to the other plasterers afterward, it was common knowledge this guy could really move on the wall. I remember glancing over at his tools during lunch. They were shinning in the daylight, very clean indeed. This was the first experience in meeting Jeff Johnson. As the months and eventually years went by, Jeff and I, along with an Irishman by the name of Jude, worked together on various projects for various contractors, all over the region. Setting here today, 40 plus years after the start of my plastering career, and 20 plus years after having met Jeff and Jude. I am still plastering nearly every day. A tad bit slower then I used to be, but very aware of my trade and its secrets, both English and American. Jude was diagnosed with MS in 2001 and went back home to Ireland. He is confined to a wheelchair these days and spends his days in his homeland. Jeff and I work together everyday. I spend many days out estimating and inspecting Plaster, Stucco and EIFS projects, both projects we have completed, and projects we are looking to price out. I think most of our work these days is primarily viewed as art work. One gets to a point in their age, whereby its no longer how much you can do, but how well you can do it. The combination of my English Plastering heritage and Jeff's American Plastering Heritage, really created a solid experience base in which to draw upon in any given situation. Operating a company more along the lines of a government, with daily situation meetings, sharing of information, solid documentation and expert quality control, really means the difference in making it in the market these days. While we have seen our share of flybynight contractors sweep through the area, their course of contracts is short lived in the conservative Indiana Atmosphere. We both agree that taking photos and exposing our work first hand, both on the web as well as in a database for future reference, is the most important part of just how clients view and decide upon prospective contractors. We have spent countless hours developing our quality control program, especially in dealing with EIFS and exterior Synthetics. These products are much more technical in terms of application, and each small part of the specification details, are extremely important in order to obtain a lasting wall system. Continuing to stay on top of new application details and industry training is our top priority. A teacher cannot teach, what a teacher has not learned, never have I found a more suitable fit, for those old English words. I hope to work another decade before retiring, and although my work history with Jeff and Indiana Wall Systems has been rich, I think I may just return home and spend my days exploring my childhood stomping grounds, maybe enlisting an apprentice and doing a few side jobs, to maybe pass on a small piece of who I am as a person, back in my homeland. You only live once, and nothing should be taken lightly in life, what seems like an eternity on the front side, seems like a moment from behind.

                           For the Birds!!

As many of you already know very well, there are a few species of woodpeckers who regularly attack EIFS Products. Repairing Woodpecker holes can, and often will, begin to be a problem, leaving the homeowner with an unslightly mess of patches, and or refacing the EIFS many times per year.

Due to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Federal Agencies, these animals are a protected species, which adds to the difficulty is ceasing their periodic, and sometimes annual attacks on homes. The holes created by these creatures allow moisture to saturate sub-straights, causing mold, mildew and general decay to the biodegradable wood and combustible construction materials, typically used here in the States. Leaving an open hole in EIFS is never a good idea

Years of dealing with what seemed to be an odd issue at first, became nothing short of a real battle. With several trips back to homes, repairing small holes, often times high up on the side of a home, presenting tedious EIFS patching situations throughout what were in many cases, new walls! We have our own methods of dealing with these birds. Our methods do not harm the birds, rather scare them, and keep them from coming back. With a few small installations, we will have your home bird free, hole free forever. We have seen many ideas online over the years, always ending in failure. But our customers know very well, and are setting back with real piece of mind, bird and hole free.   (Certainly not speaking of Dryvit's Owls)
Standing behind our work for a full decade, created real sustainable problems in dealing with these birds, and their substantial contribution to our work load, and obvious needed repetitive mobilizations to both honor our claims, and retain our reputation. Pouring many hours of onsite research and development, we discovered real quick back then, most methods of stopping these birds were pure Bologna. It takes keen observation and charting, followed by very specific placement and delivery, rendering absolute elimination, leaving birds in the trees unharmed, and walls looking as good as the day we finished them. Our methods include no pesticides, electric, moving parts, unslightly additions, Owls, dummies or any of the other endless contributions aimed at stopping this problem.

Indiana Wall Systems exceeded my expectations across the board. They took a dingy old exterior and turned it into one of the most beautiful homes in my area. I cannot be in the yard, walk to the mailbox, or even walk the dog without a passerby stopping to comment on my house and how much it has changed. My 75 year old neighbor remembers when the house was built, and is constantly joking around telling me someone must have switched houses while i was at work.

I have spent many years working in the field as a union plasterer, field superintendent, project manager, pricing, applying, studying and seeing first hand the changes to EIFS specifications and application procedures over the years. I was lucky enough to manage eight simultaneous government projects under the direct supervision of James Justice, the very EIFS consultant/architect who executed the bulk of litigation during the considerable EIFS wars, whereby the southern states actually shut down the application of these products due to the development of millions in Insurance claims by homeowners who's homes had molded, rotted and completely biodegraded beneath these products. One search for "defective stucco.com" will provide plenty of real world web information on the subject. Eventually it was ruled to be primarily caused by improper installation procedures, however, the EIFS industry seen mass amounts of changes to the application details in the few years following. I Consider myself lucky to have worked side by side through so many thousands of square feet of EIFS application, with the very guy who inspected and isolated the issues and problems with EIFS and its application. Gaining one of a kind real world insight into the correct application of these products.
